College student tells Humboldt Human Rights Commission police reports and court records not provided

Michael Malilli, who identified himself as a local college student, used his public comment time to describe repeated difficulties obtaining police reports and court records and asked whether the Human Rights Commission could assist.

"They never get back to me," Malilli said of his attempts to obtain police reports from the Arcadia Police Department, describing multiple written requests and failures by court staff to provide signed orders. He said two arrest incidents and related court proceedings have been ongoing for about 10 months and that he has struggled to access records he believes are necessary to defend himself.

The commission's chair said the body could not take action on an item that was not on the agenda but thanked Malilli for the detailed account and said commissioners might be able to check into the matter. Commissioners also asked procedural questions about how Malilli had submitted requests and whether he retained copies of submitted forms.

Commissioners and staff advised Malilli on follow-up steps, including contacting the police chief or the court clerk and keeping a copy of submitted requests.
