The Bowie City Council approved two automatic aid agreements designed to formalize immediate, reciprocal response between the Bowie Fire Department and neighboring volunteer departments.
City staff presented an automatic aid agreement with the Sunset Volunteer Fire Department and a second agreement with the neighboring Bowie Rill/Bowie Rule volunteer department (transcript spelling varies). Under the agreements, when an incident occurs the closest available truck and a minimum crew (the transcript references a minimum crew of two) will automatically respond to assist; each department maintains liability for its own personnel and equipment. The agreements are perpetual but include a 30-day termination provision if any party decides to withdraw.
Councilmembers asked operational questions about whether automatic aid could spread available crews thin, how the departments' staffing will be coordinated, and requested a follow-up report in about six months to evaluate how the agreements work in practice. Staff said they would provide an update.
Both agreements were moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
