Superintendent says district goals are on track; highlights curriculum alignment, expanded counseling and AI pilots

“Overall, our district goals are on track,” Dr. Johnson said, while noting certain objectives are at risk and will require additional attention. He highlighted recent curriculum work: TK–8 math adoption and a middle‑school Spanish adoption that align the K–8 and high‑school programs.
Johnson identified intervention supports as an essential next step, saying the district needs a leveled Tier 2 intervention and resources so student supports are consistent as students matriculate across grades. On mental‑health services, he reported elementary counseling has been brought into the district and a sensory space at Richmond Elementary exists, with plans to create an outdoor sensory space at Center Street.
On innovation, the superintendent said the district is piloting an online AI course and plans two high‑school AI experiences in the fall: a standalone AI course and an embedded module in the engineering pathway. He also reported improved maintenance work‑order turnaround times, an architect selection for the facilities master plan, and that run‑hide‑fight drills will be implemented this semester with age‑appropriate variations.
Earlier in the meeting Dr. Sarah veil Vlantes and Al Luna recognized El Segundo Middle School Model UN students for conference honors, and student ASB secretary Emma Eisenberg reported recent campus events and upcoming activities.
