Monroe County health director: wastewater shows rising flu, RSV and norovirus despite fewer COVID emergency visits

Lori Kelly, Monroe County Health Department director, told commissioners Jan. 22 that the county has not seen increased emergency-department visits for COVID-like illness but that wastewater concentrations of multiple viruses are trending up.
"We have not seen increases in emergency department visits for COVID like illness, but wastewater concentrations do continue to trend upwards," Kelly said, adding that data from a wastewater-scan provider show elevated levels of flu, RSV and norovirus circulating locally.
Kelly also described logistical changes for vaccinations. "The health department is still transitioning vaccination services from IU Health Community Health. Currently, we are referring individuals to the Morgan County Health Department for vaccinations," she said.
Public-health officials and the board did not announce new local mandates at the meeting. The presentation emphasized surveillance findings and short-term operational shifts while steering residents with questions about vaccines toward the Morgan County Health Department and county public-health communications.
The Monroe County Board of Commissioners will meet again Jan. 29; health staff did not set a new public briefing date tied to the wastewater results.
