Neb. Sen. McCune resigns effective upon adjournment after apology

Lincoln — Sen. McCune announced on the floor of the Nebraska Legislature on Jan. 13 that he will resign his seat effective upon adjournment, apologizing for what he called "careless" words and actions and saying he accepted responsibility for their impact.

In remarks delivered as a point of personal privilege, McCune said he had "come to the decision that I am resigning my position at this time," adding that the choice was made after "deep prayer and careful discernment" and with the goal of allowing the Legislature to "move forward with unity, purpose and integrity." He repeatedly apologized to colleagues and constituents for the consequences of his conduct.

The clerk announced that McCune's communication concerning his resignation will be printed in the journal and an official communication read later from Lieutenant Governor Joe Kelly acknowledged receipt of McCune's resignation letter dated Jan. 13, 2026 and said the clerk had been directed to forward the letter to the governor for notification.

Senate leaders adjusted floor business in response: Speaker Arch said the body would not proceed with LR 282 and would continue bill introductions for the remainder of the morning rather than ending introductions at the previously announced time, to allow processing of introduced bills by the clerk.

Before resigning, McCune told colleagues he regretted the circumstances that led to this moment and outlined a personal commitment to "listening and learning" and to accountability. He said, "I accept my responsibility for the impact of my words and my actions." The clerk recorded the procedural steps tied to his resignation, which the lieutenant governor's office confirmed would be sent to the governor.

The Legislature adjourned later in the morning and is scheduled to reconvene Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026, at 10 a.m.
