Executive board to seek expulsion of senator after outside harassment probe; invited-only hearing set for Jan. 12

Senator Hanson announced the conclusion of an outside investigation into a formal workplace-harassment complaint against Senator McKeon and said the Executive Board will introduce a resolution to expel McKeon pursuant to Article 3, Section 10 of the Nebraska Constitution. "The full report detailing the findings of the investigation is being formally released to the Legislature at the conclusion of my remarks," Hanson said; he identified Tara Paulson as the outside counsel who conducted the investigation.

Hanson told colleagues that the Executive Board made a unanimous recommendation and that Senator McKeon was provided formal notice via a letter sent on 01/05/2026. The announced next step is a limited, invited-only hearing before the Executive Board on Monday, 01/12/2026, at which the invited witnesses will be Senator McKeon or his legal representative and the outside counsel who conducted the investigation.

To accommodate that timetable, Hanson said he had filed a motion to suspend the rule requiring seven days’ public notice for a hearing; if the Legislature suspends the rule, the invited-only hearing would go forward as scheduled. Speaker Arch indicated the body will take up the motion to suspend the rules on 01/08/2026.

The resolution itself was introduced by the Executive Board and, as announced, remains pending referral and formal committee scheduling. No hearing record, evidentiary findings text, or vote on the resolution was recorded in the January 7 proceeding. The clerk noted LR 2 82 from the Executive Board will be laid over and referred for a public hearing as recorded in the journal.

Next steps: the Legislature is expected to debate the motion to suspend the seven-day notice rule on 01/08/2026; the Executive Board’s invited-only hearing is scheduled for 01/12/2026 if the body permits the accelerated timeline.
