Residents pitch rollerblading event; Launch Lenawee opens LEAP cohort as board hears festival updates

During the public comment portion of the Main Street Board meeting on July 9, residents and partners spoke about community events and business supports.

Aaron Cheshire, a downtown business owner and Adrian resident, proposed creating a rollerblading event at the Four Corners immediately following First Fridays to give new skaters a safe place to skate without repeated long street closures. Cheshire said informal rollerblading after the bicentennial was popular but noted that other streets in Adrian are rough for skaters. "It would be like a light up event... it would give the young people that are excited about doing this a fun, secure, and, safe place to skate," Cheshire said.

Sheila Blair, representing Launch Lenawee, announced the new LEAP entrepreneurship program beginning the coming Tuesday at the Adrian Armory (230 W. Maumee). Blair said orientations drew a record 21 attendees and invitations were extended to 25 people; she described LEAP as a multi-week curriculum taking participants from idea to launch and said additional trainings (QuickBooks, AI marketing and franchise information) will be marketed to downtown businesses.

Don Taylor, an Adrian resident, gave updates on the 18th annual Artelicious (September), said the festival received its best applicant numbers to date after a jury-process change and noted added downtown performances that will help bring people to downtown that weekend. Board members thanked speakers and noted staff will follow up on ideas and volunteer support.
