The Montebello Traffic & Safety Commission approved multiple traffic‑calming projects Monday, including two speed humps on Via San Del Oro and speed humps plus a deceleration/right‑turn pocket into Topgolf Drive.
Traffic consultant Dennis Barnes said Via San Del Oro’s average measured speed was about 31 mph on a posted 25‑mph street and that one day’s reading reached 33 mph — meeting the commission’s policy trigger for speeding (8 mph or more above the posted limit on measured days). Barnes recommended two speed humps spaced per Institute of Transportation Engineers guidance to reduce speeds and improve safety; commissioners discussed spacing, signage and coordination with emergency services.
On Topgolf Drive, staff recommended constructing speed humps between Via Campo and Belo Verde Drive and adding a deceleration lane on Via Campo into Topgolf Drive. Staff said a resurfacing contractor was already working in the corridor, which would reduce incremental construction cost and allow installation while paving work is underway. Commissioners approved the director’s recommendation by motion and roll call.
Commissioners and staff discussed emergency‑vehicle operations and said they coordinate with fire and police; Barnes said his experience shows emergency vehicles typically lose only a few miles per hour when negotiating humps and that designs can accommodate emergency routes. Staff said they will provide a speed‑hump map to the fire department and coordinate installation timing with contractors and public safety.
