TALLAHASSEE — The House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday voted to report House Resolution 761, condemning persecution of Christians in Nigeria and supporting U.S. diplomatic redesignation, after testimony from faith‑based organizations and a heated exchange among committee members.
Representative Plakin, a prime cosponsor, and Representative Daniels described HR761 as an expression of Florida values on religious freedom and human dignity and said it was intended to highlight atrocities by Boko Haram and other extremists. "H R 761 is a resolution condemning the persecution of Christians in Nigeria and supporting Nigeria's redesignation as a country of particular concern," Plakin said.
John Labriola of the Christian Family Coalition and Aaron DiPietro of Florida Family Voice waived in support and urged the committee to pass the resolution. Plakin and Daniels cited approximate figures and personal testimony to underscore the humanitarian concerns.
Representative Barnaby, while stating he did not intend to disparage Muslims, said "America is at war with Islam. Islam is at war with America," remarks that several members immediately questioned as overbroad and inflammatory. Representative Chambers urged caution: "We believe in religious freedom for all... I just wanted to make sure that what we're doing is not demonizing another religion." Other members expressed support for the resolution while stressing the distinction between terrorist groups and entire faith communities.
The committee voted 18‑0 to report HR761 favorably.
