Allegany schools honor student artists, athletes and state championship teams

At its Dec. 10 meeting the Allegany County Board of Education recognized student achievements in art and athletics, awarding winners of the district Christmas card contest and honoring state championship teams.
Superintendent Jeff Avey introduced winners from the career center and district schools and presented gift cards and copies of student designs. "This year, the Allegany district participated in the holiday card contest," Avey said while introducing finalists and describing the selection process.
Students recognized included Madison Penrod (career center, teacher Michael Schockey), Claire Zumbrun (Parkside, fourth grade), Mallory Bush (Braddock Middle, eighth grade) and Ben Shanklin (Allegheny High School senior) whose artwork earned juried acceptance and scholarship opportunities.
The board also recognized the Ford Hill Unified Flag Football team and Coach Jeff Bridal for their state championship wins in both the skills competition and the 5-vs-5 division; players named included Abu Stickley, Amos Stickley and Tate Shambaugh. Coach Alkire later presented homecoming award winners Nick Willison and Jabril Daniels and described the contribution of underclassmen to the championship season.
Board members congratulated the students and invited family and community members to future county art displays and athletic events.
