Delegate Ryan Araki presented House Bill 211 to the Ways and Means Committee, asking the panel to permit Baltimore County to grant a property tax credit for the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 34 building in Middle River.
Araki described the lodge as both a union hall and a community hub that hosts meetings, banquets and county events and noted similar community-organization buildings in Baltimore County already qualify under state law. "The most recent property tax bill for the lodge was about $12,534," he said, adding that a fiscal note later placed the amount closer to $9,600.
Araki said the credit would have a minimal impact on the county’s budget and that the lodge supports numerous community activities, including a Baltimore County Department of Public Works meeting scheduled at the facility. The sponsor acknowledged the measure had not yet been voted on by the county delegation and said the delegation would hold a hearing later in the week.
The committee concluded the sponsor’s presentation without a vote.
What’s next: The sponsor said he would follow up with the delegation and the subcommittee chair on status and any local feedback.
