The Osteopathic Medical Board of California on Jan. 22 approved targeted revisions to its 2024–2028 strategic plan that add accessibility to its diversity, equity and inclusion language and create an OMBC "legislative day." The motion was approved by roll call and carried unanimously.
Board members debated the wording for goal 2.2 at length, focusing on whether phrasing should emphasize "protecting scope of practice" or should instead center the board's role in protecting public safety. John Cummins proposed broadening the language so the board "has a voice in the legislative process," and members agreed to further refine the text to clarify intent.
The final language the board directed staff to publish reads in part: "Establish an OMBC legislative day for board representatives to meet with legislators, highlight the distinct philosophy and contributions of the osteopathic medical profession, and ensure public safety through the board's active voice in legislation." The executive director was authorized to publish an amended plan after the board vote.
Board President Denise Pines framed the change as part of an effort to make the board's public-facing message clearer ahead of future legislative and oversight interactions, including an upcoming sunset review. A roll-call vote recorded unanimous approval.
The motion also instructed staff to update member names and leadership titles in the published plan and to add an internal monthly newsletter item to keep members informed between quarterly meetings. Staff said the updated strategic plan will be posted publicly after publication processing by the Department of Consumer Affairs.
