The meeting also included an extended review of the AARP age-friendly network, described by the facilitator as a five-year process involving a community survey, an action plan and multiyear implementation. Several members said the AARP network felt too structured and resource-intensive for Philomath’s current capacity and instead favored starting with local, smaller-scale actions (listening sessions with seniors, targeted grants, and pilot projects). The group noted AARP grant deadlines but concluded a locally driven approach aligned better with available capacity and preferred direct engagement with seniors.
The committee asked staff to add an 'age-friendly communities' discussion to the next month’s agenda and to consider scheduling a senior listening session in May to collect priorities directly from older residents.
