Weston board approves $4.72M capital budget; North House HVAC added to request
Summary
The board approved a $4,720,200 FY27 capital budget that adds the North House HVAC project in gross amount to protect eligibility for an estimated 22% state reimbursement; the board noted design funding of $230,000 was previously approved and that bids will await state review.
The Weston School District Board of Education unanimously approved the fiscal year 2027 capital budget in the amount of $4,720,200, including the North House HVAC project entered at its gross cost to preserve state reimbursement eligibility.
Chair Deborah told the board the North House HVAC was added to the capital request after a July 1 change in the state grant process would otherwise make summer work ineligible for reimbursement. She said the reimbursement rate currently stands at about 22%, which the chair estimated equates to roughly $500,000 in potential reimbursement for the project.
Phil (district administrator) told the board the $2.4 million gross estimate for North House includes contingencies and is "as firm as we can be" as of the design phase, while acknowledging that final bid results could differ. Phil also said $230,000 for design was approved last year and that design specifications should be completed shortly.
On procurement timing, Phil said the district must wait for state review and authorization before issuing an RFP and proceeding with construction; he referenced "section 10,291" while describing the requirement that a project be fully funded before undertaking it.
David moved to approve the capital budget in the amount of $4,720,200; Lisa seconded and the board approved the motion unanimously. Board members asked staff to correct a clerical amount for the central office HVAC on a revised sheet before sending materials to the board of selectmen.
What happens next: staff will make the indicated corrections, continue design and specification work, and follow state review and procurement steps before issuing a request for proposals for the North House HVAC project.
