Selectmen authorize first phase of veterans banner program at DAV Memorial Park

The Town of Norwood Board of Selectmen on Jan. 27 voted to approve a first-phase veterans banner program at DAV Memorial Park that will install banners on available electrical poles around the park.
Derek Winterstrand, the town’s veteran service agent, asked the board for final approval of the program and described logistics: an eight-week application window starting Feb. 9, a planned unveiling on Memorial Day weekend, a 24-by-48-inch banner format, and a first-phase limit of 24 banners because of pole availability. Military Tribute Banners will manage applications and production; the vendor’s website is militarytributebanners.org.
Winterstrand said the fee for a standard banner will be $105, and that Gold Star family banners will be provided at no charge by the vendor. Payments will be processed through the Norwood Military Family Relief Fund; the town will issue receipts and release payment to the vendor when banners are complete and ready to ship.
“...I respectfully request the board of selectmen approve [the] veterans banner program,” Winterstrand said as he closed his request for approval.
Board members applauded the proposal, asked about hardship assistance for families that cannot pay the fee, and discussed potential future expansion to other locations (subject to pole ownership and utility approvals). The board noted the program will start centrally at the DAV Memorial Park as a trial run and that staff will collect community feedback before expanding.
A motion to approve placement of the banners and to proceed with the first-phase rollout passed by voice vote; the transcript records the vote as unanimous, 4 to 0.
What happens next: The veteran services office will launch the application portal on Feb. 9, accept applications on a first-come, first-served basis up to the phase limit, and coordinate installation with the town’s light department and the vendor.
