Wellington begins camera enforcement in school zones; permanent cameras due in October

Miss Coach told the council that camera‑based enforcement of school‑zone speeds is effective immediately for violations and that fines will be $100. She said the village is working with the camera contractor, electrical subcontractor and FP&L to hardwire temporary trailers onto permanent 20‑mph flashing poles; the goal is to have permanent cameras and remove the temporary trailers in October, though some locations may take longer because of additional FP&L work.
On early metrics, staff reported averaging about 740 infractions per day during initial operation. Miss Coach and other staff cautioned the council that a recent drop in recorded infractions was attributable in part to some trailers being temporarily out of service and relocated during recalibration, not to a sustained change in driver behavior. "We're averaging based on infraction numbers around 7 40 infractions a day," she said. Staff also outlined that school‑zone times (active enforcement windows) generally mirror previously posted drop‑off and pick‑up periods, and that signage is posted at each location indicating camera operational times.
Council members asked for continued public information to reduce confusion over when cameras are enforced and staff said they will continue outreach and clarify times and locations on village channels.
