Chief Jody Casper, chief of the Nantucket Police Department, introduced the department in a short Government 101 video, describing staffing levels, core services and seasonal staffing for summer events. The video did not include a publication date or specific phone or email contact information.
"I began my career with the City of Northampton Police Department and worked there for 25 years, the last 9 serving as their Chief of Police," Casper said, noting she joined the Nantucket Police Department in 2024. She identified the department's location as "the Public Safety Complex at 4 Fairgrounds Road" and said it shares the facility with the fire department.
Casper gave a breakdown of staffing "when fully staffed": 41 full-time sworn police officers and three part-time reserve officers, along with 11 dispatchers and seven administrative positions. She said the department also hires "up to 40 community service officers" each summer to provide additional security on foot, bike and ATV during the island's busy season.
The chief listed six core services the department provides: emergency police response; operational planning for large-scale events such as the Daffodil Festival, Memorial Day weekend, Fourth of July and the Boston Pops; emergency communications and dispatch; criminal investigations; and permitting and licensing. She also outlined routine duties officers perform, including responding to car accidents, investigating suspicious activity, conducting motor-vehicle stops, serving arrest warrants and investigating crimes.
Casper emphasized collaboration with other local bodies and working groups to address community concerns, saying the department is engaged on issues such as domestic violence, addiction and mental health. She also described administrative work that supports operations, including training, paperwork, report writing and testifying in court.
"Thank you for taking the time to watch this video introduction of the town's police department as part of the town's government 101 video series," Casper said. She invited viewers to share feedback and said the department can be reached by phone, email, at its walk-in service location and on social media, but the video did not provide specific contact numbers or addresses.
The video functions as an informational overview of the department's structure and responsibilities; it does not announce new policies or formal actions. Viewers seeking specific contact information, employment details or up-to-date staffing should contact the department directly or consult the town's official channels.
