Teacher: California State Teachers Retirement System calculator eased retirement planning

Johanna Scott, director of early childhood education for Twin Rivers Unified, said she first learned about the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) when she was an intern teacher and that the system "really does take some of that guesswork out" of retirement planning.
Scott singled out CalSTRS' personalized retirement calculator as especially helpful for educators navigating retirement options. "The coolest thing that has been done with CalSTRS lately is their personalized calculator. Best thing ever because you can go in and do so many what if situations," she said. She added that the tool contributes to a feeling of security about her retirement: "I feel safe. I feel secure. Like, I know my retirement's gonna be there."
Scott contrasted her situation with that of previous generations: her parents did not have a similar tool to plan retirement, and she said having CalSTRS makes long-term planning more realistic. Looking ahead, Scott said when she retires she hopes to travel and spend more time with family and also to engage in advocacy and policy reform for early childhood education.
