Senate dispenses with routine readings, schedules committee meetings and stands recessed until 1 p.m. Monday
Summary

The Senate convened for a routine session that opened with roll call, an invocation by Joe Thrasher and the national anthem performed by Aubrey Mapp, before moving through procedural business and committee scheduling. Senator Blackwell moved to dispense with the reading of the journal; the motion carried on voice vote. The chamber likewise dispensed with the reading of committee reports and the titles of bills and resolutions.
The session included introductions and recognitions: Senator Harkins introduced Pastor Thrasher's family; Senator Boyd introduced Lisa McErieff as a newly appointed member of the state cosmetology board; and Senator Frasier introduced Tiffany Mapp and Edna McCallum, relatives of page and anthem performer Aubrey Mapp. The president thanked the performer after the anthem.
A series of committee meeting announcements followed. Multiple committees were scheduled for the coming hours and Monday, with repeated references to Room 216, Room 210, Room 409 and Room 407 and times such as 2:30 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 4:00 p.m., and 4:15 p.m. Committees listed included Education, Appropriations, Judiciary (divisions A and B), Economic Workforce Development, Municipalities, Highways and Transportation, Finance, Medicaid, Marine Resources, Tourism, Energy, Corrections, Universities and Colleges, Environmental Protection, Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, and others.
Before recessing, the presiding officer asked senators to remember absent members Senator Whaley and Senator Parks in their prayers. Senator Blackall moved that the Senate stand and recess until the last committee report is filed and that the journal reflect adjournment until 1:00 p.m. Monday; the motion carried on voice vote and the Senate stood and recessed.
The body also requested that the Senate adjourn in memory of several individuals mentioned on the record, including Judy Fry, a longtime AP teacher in the Pascagoula school district, former state trooper Reverend David Ard, and others.
Because the day's business was primarily procedural, no bills were debated or voted on substantively during the recorded segments. Committee schedules and introductions were the primary matters advanced; formal action recorded was the series of motions to dispense with readings and the motion to stand and recess.
