Garfield Heights — The Garfield Heights City Council publicly honored Brianna L. Spencer as Social Worker of the Year and adopted a separate resolution recognizing January as Thyroid Awareness Month.
Council read a resolution describing Spencer as a licensed independent social worker and clinical trauma professional, noting her roles with Fortitude Wellness and the Cuyahoga County Public Library. After the reading, Ms. Spencer thanked council: “It’s great to be honored for your work … it’s definitely, an honor to stand before you all in my city where I reside,” and said the work will continue.
Councilwoman Dr. Mack, sponsor of the thyroid-resolution, explained the measure had personal significance: “Thyroid Awareness Month is very significant to me because I actually live with thyroid disease,” she said, and described symptoms and the value of awareness. Another councilmember recounted having thyroid surgery and said the resolution would help raise community awareness. The council adopted the thyroid-awareness resolution by roll call 7–0.
Both items were ceremonial in nature: the Spencer resolution congratulated her and authorized the Clerk to transmit a copy to Ms. Spencer and to local media; the thyroid-resolution was intended to promote public awareness. The meeting record does not include further programmatic steps or funding tied to the awareness designation.
