Council advances amendment to allowing two ground-floor blade signs, defers second-floor decision

The Ridgewood Village Council discussed a proposed amendment to chapter 190 of the code to change blade-sign rules for commercial properties.
The staff presentation summarized the principal change: Section B would allow "no more than 2 blade signs, each of which shall be located no closer than 20 feet away from one another," changing the prior single-sign limitation. Councilors debated the issue of whether second-floor tenants should also be eligible for blade signs; staff and several council members said the amendment as written applies to ground-floor businesses only and suggested revisiting second-floor policy as a separate issue.
Several council members supported the two-sign rule as a modest way to enhance street-level character while preserving pedestrian sightlines. One councilor said the 20-foot spacing was intended to prevent cluttering of storefronts. The ordinance is scheduled for introduction on Feb. 11; changes to extend signage to second-floor tenants would require reintroduction or a separate amendment process.
No final ordinance adoption occurred at the workshop; councilors directed staff and the ordinance working group to proceed with the current language for introduction.
