Nueces County forms adult sexual assault response team, approves biennial report

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Nueces County's commissioner's court on Jan. 28 voted to establish an adult sexual assault response team (SART) effective Feb. 1, 2026, and approved the team's biennial report.
The resolution notes the 87th Texas Legislature requires counties to form an adult sexual assault response team and lists mandated members and designated representatives: Purple Door crisis center (represented by Maribel Arredondo), the Nueces County District Attorney's Office (represented by James Granberry or designee), the sheriff's office (captain Garza or designee), the City of Corpus Christi Police Department (chief Mike Markle or designee), Driscoll Children's Hospital for forensic examiner representation, and naval base victim advocates, among others.
A presenter told the court the team's purpose is to ensure survivors "have a well rounded support system" and that the mandated entities form the core membership while additional community partners, including Family Protective Services and military-base advocates, may be included. "The whole purpose of the team is to make sure that the survivors in the community have a well rounded support system," the presenter said (SEG 773–785).
Commissioners asked how the team will operate and exercise oversight. The presenter said the team will draft a protocol that defines agency roles and collaboration, and that the protocol will be submitted to the court and the governor's adult survivor task force as part of a biannual reporting requirement.
The court adopted the resolution by voice vote and unanimously approved the biennial report. The SART's first priorities will include writing protocols, instituting case reviews to identify service gaps, and considering survivor participation at the table for ongoing guidance.
