The Santa Ana Unified board on Jan. 27 approved multiple job descriptions and temporary positions intended to strengthen site-level supports and create internal career pathways.
District staff explained some items were not new hires but rather formal job descriptions for existing roles (for example, outreach consultants already working at high schools and alternative education sites). Other items were new, temporary positions funded through community-schools grants at Valley High School: a community-schools academic support coach and a behavior coach. Staff said those positions were identified through site WASC needs assessments and the community-schools advisory process and will pilot this school year with funding tied to community-schools grants.
"These positions will be temporary… we'll pilot this year and reassess for next year," staff said, adding that the funding for community-schools positions is restricted to that program and that sites must reapply or sustain funding moving forward.
The board also approved several human-resources classified-management job descriptions (senior analyst, senior coordinator and managers) designed to create an internal career ladder so classified employees can be promoted to higher-level roles without adding net cost. Human-resources staff said the strategy leverages a vacancy at an executive level and realigns resources so the district can build capacity while achieving cost savings by not backfilling certain higher-cost vacancies.
Trustees asked about pilot timelines, overlap with other student-support roles, sustainability after grant funding, and whether positions would be filled internally. Administrators said temporary positions would be flown internally and externally as required, prioritized for internal candidates when possible, and that sustainability plans would be developed with site advisory councils and through district capacity-building efforts.
Vote/outcome: Board approved the new job descriptions and community-schools positions; community-schools staff explained measures to track sustainability and build systems that persist beyond the pilot funding period.
