Armando Lopez, a Hammond resident, asked the Board of Public Works and Safety on Oct. 23 to waive a $500 late rental-registration fee for a rental at 4708 Henry Avenue, saying he had been in Mexico when the property was not rented and later missed a required meeting because he was hospitalized with a heart attack.
Lopez told the board he began renting the property again in December and that when he returned the city told him he owed a $500 late fee. "I end up getting sick, had a heart attack, and I couldn't come to the meeting," Lopez said, asking the board for leniency. Board members said staff needed time to research the registration history and that a co-commissioner would be present for the follow-up; the board set the matter for Nov. 6 so staff can prepare and Lopez can return.
City staff will research the rental-registration record and notify Lopez of the next hearing date; no decision to waive or reduce the fee was made at the Oct. 23 meeting.
