Roanoke County board approves first reading to accept $46,000 donation for library programs; second reading set for Feb. 10

The Roanoke County Board of Supervisors on Jan. 27 approved the first reading of an ordinance to accept and appropriate $46,000 from the Friends of the Roanoke County Public Library to support library programs and services.
Jim Blanton, director of library services, told the board the Friends have supported the library for more than 30 years through book sales and other fundraising and have expanded support this year by providing $16,000 for enhanced programs and services year-round. Blanton said last year's summer reading program participants read more than 45,000 books and highlighted a newly installed StoryWalk at the South County Library's nature trail.
Blanton described how Friends fundraising (annual book sales, branch sale areas and partnerships with businesses) underpins programming such as 3-D printing, Mystery Night at South County Library and other outreach. The ordinance approved on first reading would accept and appropriate the donation to the library department budget.
A motion to approve the first reading and schedule the second reading for Feb. 10, 2026 was moved and seconded; the clerk called the roll and the board voted unanimously to approve the measure on first reading. The ordinance will return for final action on Feb. 10.
