The Gonzales Planning Commission approved conditional use permit PC2025‑11 to allow a nonprofit boxing gym to operate at 201 Alta Street, roughly a 3,000‑square‑foot space in the industrial area, and added a condition requiring clarified and striped parking for safety, commissioners said.
Staff's report described the applicant's operation (youth and adult boxing, strength and conditioning) and the conditions staff recommended: compliance with building, fire and safety codes; maintenance of liability and professional insurance; CPR/first‑aid training and an automated external defibrillator on site; and background checks for trainers if programming expanded. Staff said the applicant provided written acceptance of the conditions.
Applicant Andy (identified in the record as the operator) spoke by Zoom and thanked the community for support, saying the gym is currently well attended. He also clarified insurance arrangements: "The USA Boxing Liability Insurance covers all my USA Amateur Boxing Fighters. The non fighters have to sign a liability waiver," he told commissioners.
Safety questions: Commissioners asked whether a medic would be on site (staff: no), raised the facility's proximity to railroad tracks and liability concerns if a child left the facility and approached the tracks, and requested security measures such as alarms, panic hardware or landscape deterrents. Staff and the applicant said enrolled minors are supervised and that alarms, fencing or prickly plantings could be considered; staff noted that the city could require alarm hardware and other site improvements through permit conditions.
Parking and site improvements: A commissioner proposed, and the commission adopted, an added condition requiring the applicant and/or property owner to stripe and clarify the parking area to improve safety and circulation. Staff said they would modify the resolution to reflect the added condition and bring the signed resolution back within days.
Outcome and next steps: The motion to approve PC2025‑11 with the additional parking condition passed on a voice vote; the transcript records the motion as "approved with the amendment." Staff will finalize the resolution language and circulate it for signatures. The approved permit will require the applicant to meet the listed safety and insurance conditions prior to expanded programming.
The commission then continued with other business and adjourned.
