Chief Craft announced to the Seaford City Council that the Seaford Police Department has completed the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) national accreditation process and received formal approval on Nov. 15. Craft said the multi-year effort began in 2019 and included independent reviews of department policies, practices and operations by out‑of‑state assessors.
"It focuses on accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement," Craft said, describing the program as the "gold standard" for law enforcement accreditation. He told council members the process reviewed policies, documented training and on‑site performance, and included dozens of interviews with officers, staff, city leadership and community members.
Craft said the accreditation supports officer safety and professionalism, enhances grant eligibility, reduces legal and financial risk for the city, and helps build community trust. He said the department will provide an annual, comprehensive report to the council with comparative crime statistics and performance benchmarks covering 2023–2025.
The chief noted the department was already state accredited and that CALEA requires continuing compliance: an off‑site inspection occurs annually and a full on‑site compliance review is expected in 2029. After the presentation, council members offered congratulations and applause.
