Montgomery Recreation names new director, opens summer-camp registration Jan. 20 and offers RecAssist scholarships

Montgomery Recreation introduced Geiva Albornoz as its new director and outlined priorities for the department, upcoming summer-camp registration and financial-assistance options for residents.
"Nuestra puerta este1 abierta, siempre, para nuestra comunidad," said Geiva Albornoz, the program guest introduced as a former county councilmember and the new director of Montgomery Recreation. He said his top priorities include expanding programs and supports for youth mental health and taking programs into neighborhoods rather than waiting for residents to come to centers.
Summer camps and how to register: Communications manager Mf3nica Hammer said registration for county residents opens Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 6:30 a.m.; non-resident registration begins Jan. 22. Families are urged to use Active Montgomery online to create accounts and register. For in-person help the department office and aquatic centers open early on registration days; Mf3nica provided a Montgomery Parks customer-service phone as an additional contact.
Scholarships and discounts: Mf3nica described RecAssist, a program that provides qualifying households (those receiving Medicaid, Care for Kids, free school lunch and similar public benefits) a scholarship of $400 per eligible family member to cover up to 80% of program costs. Montgomery Parks also operates a Mary Wells Harley Dream Camp scholarship fund for resident children ages 318; applications are available on the Montgomery Parks website.
Other dates and offerings: Swim-class registration opens Feb. 18. The department said it offers more than 100 different camps, a new adult-only camp, parent-and-child options, specialty weeks and therapeutic recreation. Geiva and Mf3nica urged residents to contact the department or visit the Active Montgomery portal for full schedules and fee details.
Immigrant resources: The program also highlighted the Gilcrest immigrant resource center, which provides English and computer classes, citizenship classes and legal clinics, and links residents to nonprofit partners for additional services.
Contact: Listeners were encouraged to use Active Montgomery for camp registration and to call the Montgomery Parks customer-service line announced on-air for assistance.
