Walnut Grove councilmembers heard a proposal for a 'hometown heroes' banner program that would place uniform, pole‑mounted vinyl banners honoring veterans and first responders around town. The council favored the concept and discussed eligibility, committee composition, costs and sponsorship options.
The sponsor‑funded program described in the packet would accept nominations for living or deceased veterans and first responders; the criteria call for proof of service and residency (past or present) and allow family or community sponsors to pay for banners. The proposal estimates each vinyl banner would cost about $150; the packet suggests a $100 sponsorship option to subsidize banners for residents without a sponsor. The program would be administered by a volunteer committee that would review applications, recommend candidates, coordinate repairs or replacements, and work with vendors. Councilmembers suggested at least one veteran or first responder serve on the committee to help vet nominations.
Council also discussed alternate recognition options, including memorial bricks, a veterans memorial park or a separate award program for exceptional citizens. Staff said funds donated for banners would be restricted and require council approval for spending. The council asked staff to return with any incidental budget line items for the coming fiscal year and to bring the program forward to a future meeting for formal adoption.
