On Jan. 27 the Wythe County Board of Supervisors approved a slate of budget-committee recommendations covering small grants, fee payments for amateur leagues, a grant adjustment, and a software upgrade for parks and recreation.
The committee recommended and the board approved payment of $4,933.63 to Edward Krueger for the United Way of Southwest Virginia disaster relief fund and appropriations from ATL funds to several volunteer fire departments (each award described at $3,000). The board also accepted a VSTOP grant award that was reduced, requiring a $25,424 deduction to the budget as recommended by the finance department.
The board approved proceeding with the Dixie Diamond softball/baseball leagues, including payment of franchise and insurance fees (estimated at $910), and authorized a CivicPlus upgrade to parks-and-recreation registration software with an amendment and appropriation of $10,000 for the project and an annual maintenance cost discussed at about $9,000.
Why it matters: These actions allocate small but tangible funding to volunteer fire departments, community recreation, and a county software upgrade meant to centralize registrations and point-of-sale functions for campgrounds, pools and leagues.
Next steps: Staff will process the payments and update accounting records; departments will coordinate implementation of the parks software and provide details on ongoing maintenance costs.
