Needham's sustainability manager, Gabby Queenan, presented a draft climate communications strategy to the Select Board on Jan. 27 that would organize outreach around the six categories of the town's Climate Action Roadmap over 12 months and use social media, newsletters, monthly office hours and targeted in-person events to boost climate literacy among residents and businesses.
Queenan said the draft divides topics into two-month themes (for example, clean energy and net-zero buildings, transportation and resilience) and emphasizes framing messages to show residents practical benefits such as potential cost savings. She told board members the first year of the program is intended as a test and that impact measurement (beyond digital metrics) remains challenging.
Queenan also summarized outside sustainability funding secured in calendar year 2025: about $479,100 across 10 awards, a 13% increase over 2024. She listed notable awards and upcoming applications, including a Climate Leader communities application in early February seeking funding for rooftop solar at the Cogswell building (the Climate Leader program can award up to $1,000,000 per municipality), municipal vulnerability preparedness applications for flood modeling and stormwater basin work, and green communities funding for LED lighting upgrades at High Rock.
Board members welcomed the communications plan and suggested emphasizing economic savings and practical benefits to increase public engagement. Queenan said staff will refine the messaging and incorporate financial framing where possible.
