Needham boards defer filling assessors vacancy until election

Select Board members said a candidate has taken out and returned nomination papers for the upcoming election and that Town Counsel advised there is no mandatory timeframe requiring an earlier appointment. At the meeting, one assessor described the candidate as "eminently qualified," noting four decades of commercial real-estate experience and past representation before the Appellate Tax Board.
The boards discussed practical scheduling concerns: assessors said abatement season begins in February and that the office will be busy through March and April. Assessors and Select Board members agreed that appointing someone only to serve a short window before a potential elected successor takes office could complicate onboarding and continuity.
A motion that the Select Board and Board of Assessors "defer filling the current vacancy on the Board of Assessors via an appointment process pending confirmation that a candidate is successfully elected at the 2026 annual town election" was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
The boards noted a contingency: the Select Board may initiate the appointment process if, after the close of nomination papers and other election deadlines, there is no certified candidate for the seat.
No further action on that vacancy was taken at the Jan. 27 meeting; the Assessors adjourned their portion after the vote.
