St. Bernard Parish board highlights teachers of the year as parish government proclaims School Board Recognition Month

The St. Bernard Parish School Board on Jan. 27 honored its teachers of the year and accepted a proclamation from parish government recognizing January 2026 as School Board Member Recognition Month.

Board members watched a special edition of the district’s communications program, “Super News,” which profiled the district’s “Dynamic Dozen” teachers of the year and highlighted three parishwide winners: Christina Crego (Arlene Miro Elementary), Casey Keefe (Trist Middle School) and Kenneth Brown (Chaumet High School). Teachers who appeared described classroom practices and reasons they became educators; presenters emphasized relationships with students, inclusive classroom strategies, and hands-on learning.

Katie Thiele, representing St. Bernard Parish government, delivered the proclamation signed by President Gomez and the parish council and thanked board members for public service that affects the parish’s youth. “On behalf of them, we hereby proclaim January as School Board Member Recognition Month in St. Bernard Parish,” Thiele said.

Board members praised the featured teachers and noted a Celebrating School Community Banquet will be held in April to honor winners. Superintendent and board members also recognized the district’s maintenance and support staff for recent weather-response work that enabled schools to reopen safely after winter storms.

The board took no formal vote on the proclamation; it was presented as a recognition item. The meeting continued with officer elections and routine business.
