Donna Schroeder, county historian representing the Cemetery Commission, requested permission to apply for a Fayette Community Foundation mini grant of $2,500 to buy roadside cemetery signs sanctioned by the state and cleaning supplies for volunteer restoration workshops.
Schroeder said the signs cost about $170 each and the commission proposes buying nine signs (about $1,530) and using the remaining grant funds to purchase D2 cleaning solution, brushes and sprayers for volunteer workshops. She said tourism staff had agreed to buy a video camera that could help produce cemetery tour content for wider public outreach.
Commissioners discussed whether signposts were available for reuse and highway staff said they would look into repurposing signposts or help with installation. Schroeder said the effort would support preservation of early and unmarked graves and enable tours and improved public information about historic burial sites. The commissioners voted by voice to approve the application.
