Board approves 2026 MSU Extension agreement, funding included in budget

The Board of Commissioners approved a memorandum of agreement with MSU Extension covering Jan. 1–Dec. 31, 2026, and authorized the county to pay $132,933 as the total county assessment for fiscal year 2026. Speaker 8 moved the measure and Speaker 7 (MSU Extension district staff) described it as the standard MOA consistent with the county budget.
MSU Extension’s district representative said the requested amount reflects a 3% increase over the prior year and that the county budget included the line item. The MOA sets quarterly payments to the Extension office’s business office and is considered a routine annual authorization by staff.
During discussion a commissioner raised a potential recusal question for MSU-related staff; county counsel guidance was referenced and commissioners noted that the form and vote are determined by eligible members. After questions, the clerk conducted a roll-call vote. Commissioners recorded affirmative votes and the resolution passed.
Mary of MSU Extension used the visit to brief the board on Extension programming including 4‑H, pesticide licensing trainings, food safety resources and neutral informational materials about data centers for community decision-making. She said 4‑H participation remains roughly steady in the district and that the office will work with schools and ISDs to identify programs that attract youth interest.
The board’s action authorizes the county chair to sign the agreement and to make the scheduled payments to MSU Extension as budgeted.
