Board approves $44,650 bid to clean Harper legal drain

The Grant County Drainage Board voted Jan. 27 to approve cleaning the Harper legal drain after hearing a petition and contractor estimate.
Resident and petitioner David DeMoor said, “I'm David DeMoor, Swayze, Indiana. We'd like to to get Harper cleaned, 600 clear to the Grama Howard line, about 3.6 miles.” He told the board the ditch was last cleaned in the mid-1990s and that Jeff Redmond provided a bid of $44,650. The board's chair confirmed the Harper maintenance fund balance at $109,761.32 and asked whether members had reviewed the bid; members indicated support.
Board members discussed the scope (including beaver dams and bank slides) and interjurisdictional impacts because the work crosses into Howard County. A motion to approve proceeding with the cleaning and to allow Redmond to perform and schedule the work carried unanimously. Members asked staff to register a contract and to notify Howard County officials (Greg Blake was named as a point of contact) about timing.
Next steps recorded in the meeting: staff will prepare contract paperwork, coordinate with adjoining county representatives, and proceed toward execution once the contract is registered.
