Selma planning commissioners approve one-year extension for gas station CUP

The Selma City Planning Commission voted to grant a one-year extension for a conditional use permit that would allow construction of a commercial retail gas station and mini mart, the commission announced at its meeting.
An unidentified planning staff member told the commission the request seeks to extend the existing permit (CUP 2020-0012 / Plan 2437) for a Type 21 alcoholic beverage license and to construct a 7,800-square-foot commercial retail building with a 3,900-square-foot mini mart, six fuel pumps and a new canopy. "The staff's recommendation is, for planning commission to approve the 1 year extension as per requested... establishing the new expiration date of 12/09/2026," the staff member said.
The presenter said the project qualifies for categorical exemptions under the California Environmental Quality Act, citing CEQA guidelines §15301 (operation of existing facilities) and §15332 (infill development). The presenter also noted the applicant plans to specify above-ground gas tanks at one corner of the site plan, an adjustment discussed previously before the planning commission.
Chair Garcia opened the public hearing for comment; staff explained how virtual participants could speak, and no public testimony was offered. Commissioners then discussed the item briefly. One commissioner noted this was the third time the extension had been considered; others said they had no objection and that denying an extension would revert the approval back to the initial review stage.
A motion to approve the one-year extension was made and seconded. During roll call, six commissioners were recorded as voting yes: Commissioner Corey, Commissioner Franco, Commissioner Hall, Vice Chair Sandridge, Commissioner Ramirez and Chair Garcia. The clerk announced the motion approved.
After the vote the meeting was adjourned. After adjournment, Jason Rogers introduced himself as the new city manager for Selma City and welcomed contacts from residents; staff also introduced Megan Lawrence as the new city planner, noting it was her first day.
The commission set the new permit expiration date at 12/09/2026 and recorded the approval; no further actions or follow-up tasks were specified during the meeting.
