Clawson council appoints Alex Bischak to fill vacant seat after interviews and resident petitions

The Clawson City Council voted unanimously to appoint Alex Bischak to the city’s vacant council seat after hearing interviews from three finalists and receiving public comment and resident petitions.
Bischak, who told the council he lives and works in Clawson and serves on the DDA, said he would recuse himself from matters posing a conflict. "I, Alex Bischak, am formally resigning from the DDA. Effective immediately," he told the council before taking the oath of office.
Councilmembers described a ranking process used at the meeting that combined current council preferences with resident outreach. Councilmember Rinkovic moved that the council appoint Bischak "to fill the vacant council seat in accordance with ordinance 7 9 2 and in recognition of resident outreach, petition signatures, and the demonstrated alignment of his candidacy with the most recent expressed preferences of Clawson voters," a motion the council approved by roll call.
The appointment followed public comments from residents who said they had collected petitions supporting Bischak and another candidate, Scott Manning. Katie Terrell told the council she submitted a petition with roughly 100 signatures supporting Alex Bischak. Adam Duberstein urged the council to consider both Bischak and Manning based on their community engagement.
Before the vote the council discussed whether to make the appointment that night or defer to the next meeting; a majority favored deciding immediately and used private rankings (each councilmember named a first and second choice) for tabulation by the clerk.
After the clerk administered the oath, the council took a photo and adjourned. The meeting record shows motions earlier in the session including a 15‑minute recess and a separate motion to remove a candidate from consideration who could not appear.
The vote on Bischak’s appointment was recorded by roll call as unanimous by the members present. The council also accepted Bischak’s immediate resignation from the DDA prior to his swearing in.
