Public advisory: Flush only pee, poop and paper; cool and trash cooking oils to prevent sewer backups

Adam opened a short public advisory saying he would "talk about what not to flush down the toilet." Unidentified speakers urged residents to limit what goes into the sewer system to what the presenters called the "3 p's": "pee, poop, and paper."

An unidentified speaker warned: "If city sewer pipes receive anything other than the 3 p's, pee, poop, or paper, it can lead to backups and costly repairs." The speaker also said, "Toiletries and hygiene products, including flushable wipes, are trash and should never be flushed down the toilet."

Speakers described how the wastewater treatment plant uses screens to capture debris; that debris is collected into dumpsters and taken to the landfill, which the advisory said increases disposal costs that can be reflected on sewer bills. On household responsibility, an unidentified speaker explained that "the city sewer main is typically located in the road" and that "side sewer laterals are privately owned and maintained from the building all the way to the connection to the city sewer main in the road."

The advisory emphasized kitchen practices as a source of problems for sewer pipes. "When cooking with oils and grease, it's important to dispose of them properly," a speaker said, and summarized the recommended approach: "Cool it, can it, and trash it to prevent backups." The speakers cautioned that hot oil and grease can cool inside pipes, harden and accumulate, creating obstructions that increase the risk of backups in homes.

The advisory concluded with a final reminder: "Only flush the 3 p's. Pee, poop, and paper," and a restatement of the FOG guidance: "Cool it, can it, and trash it." The announcement contained no formal motions, votes or regulatory changes; it presented guidance to residents about household disposal practices.
