Aurora council names board members and honors local businesses during Oct. 8 meeting

Aurora — At its Oct. 8 meeting the Aurora City Council approved several mayoral appointments and recognized local businesses and faith leaders with awards and proclamations.
The council approved appointments to the Veterans Advisory Council (including Master Sergeant Scott Hellinger), the Aurora Youth Council (Juan Liz, Caleb Brown and Sai Gambodi) and the Indian American Community Outreach Advisory Board by roll call votes. During the Indian American board item Alderman Buck raised concerns that several appointees are concentrated in one ward and asked staff about reappointment timing and outreach to broaden ward representation.
Earlier in the meeting the Black Contractors Owners and Executives (BECO) presented an advocacy award to Mayor Richard C. Irvin in recognition of his work on diversity and inclusion. Marcela Cartagena of the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce presented La Quinta De Los Reyes with the Chamber’s Small Business of the Year award; owners Claudia Rucho and Jesus Sanchez thanked the city for its support. The mayor also gave Mayor’s Awards of Excellence to three young Latino entrepreneurs — Jaime Rodriguez (El Paso Masgrande), Brandon Rodriguez (Paradise Tattoo Shop) and Daniel Cuevas (Banana Split) — and announced ribbon-cutting dates.
The council read and adopted a proclamation declaring October Cybersecurity Awareness Month and recognized the IT department’s cybersecurity outreach; Leila Karamori and CIO Michael joined for the proclamation and the mayor noted free courses and upcoming workshops.
All board appointment resolutions and presentations were approved or recognized as recorded on the agenda.
