Commissioners approve $330,332 payout after material overrun on county overlay project

Public works staff told the Klamath County Road Service District the recently completed overlay on 7 Mile Road and Belanger exceeded material estimates: design documents estimated roughly 2,800 tons but the project used about 4,300 tons, in part because shoulders had to be rebuilt and the county chose to extend the overlay to avoid future mobilization costs.
Public Works presented the overrun as exceeding contracting policy thresholds and recommended final payout to Rocky Mountain Construction. A commissioner moved to approve an additional payment of $330,332.24 from the Road Service District road maintenance line item; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
Public works said about $93,000 of the overrun related to shoulder rebuilding and the remaining overrun was contiguous to the project because staff extended the overlay on the west end to reduce future costs and winter damage risk.
