Court moves payroll specialist to HR, tables fire-services director hire after candidate withdraws

The Commissioners Court on Jan. 28 approved moving the payroll benefit specialist position from the County Treasurer's department to the Human Resources department for the remainder of 2026.
Miss Scott (Speaker 9) presented the item after a workshop and said the change was intended to add checks and balances around payroll functions and to reduce the burden on the previous office. The motion described transferring the position funding from department 1400 to department 1450; Speaker 2 moved to approve and the motion carried.
On the related personnel item, the candidate selected for fire services director withdrew their candidacy early the same morning for personal reasons, and staff recommended tabling the item. Speaker 2 moved to table item number 7, Speaker 4 seconded, and the court voted to table the hire.
Court members discussed next steps; no hire was made and staff will continue recruitment or bring a new candidate at a later meeting.
