Council authorizes six-year IT services contracts for schools and city operations

Gregory C. Chaplin, Leominster's purchasing agent, requested council authorization to enter into two six‑year contracts for managed information-technology services—one for the school department (29-26) and one for the city (31-26). Chaplin told the council that longer contracts can yield better pricing and reduce administrative overhead from repeated bidding.
Under state statute the council must authorize contracts longer than three years; Chaplin said the current contract expires in June and the city plans to bid replacement services in February or March. The finance committee reviewed both requests in subcommittee and recommended approval; the council recorded votes in support (7–0) for both items.
No contract vendors or dollar figures were disclosed at the meeting; the purchasing agent said the approvals provide authority to negotiate and execute contracts within procurement rules and return to council as required.
The council did not raise objections and the chair noted the subcommittee attendance had clarified key issues prior to the full-council vote.
