Emigration Canyon board accepts county primary results, records 33.9% turnout and one uncured ballot

Unidentified Speaker 2 (staff) told the Emigration Canyon Board of Canvass that the county had sent the official primary results and that the board could formally accept them by passing a resolution. "So, yeah, 33.9% voter turnout," the staff member stated, highlighting that the city’s participation rate compared favorably with neighboring jurisdictions.

The materials provided by the county showed four local candidates with vote totals reported by staff: Robert 197 votes, Jacob 116, Zachary 53 and Dylan 14. According to staff, the top two vote-getters (Robert and Jake) will advance to the general election.

Staff reported audit activity and ballot challenges: four ballots were challenged in the set under discussion, three were cured and one was not cured; that single uncured ballot was not counted. When board members asked what 'challenged' meant, staff explained it can include signature mismatches, missing or incorrectly completed envelope fields, or similar administrative defects and that the county audited both paper and electronic records.

After the presentation, Unidentified Speaker 1 moved to approve a resolution accepting the county’s reported results; the motion was seconded. The board conducted a roll-call vote. The following members were recorded as voting "Aye": Joe Smoka; David Brinch; Catherine Harris; Jennifer Hawks; Robert Pinot. The resolution to accept the county results was approved.

Board members signed the canvass document that staff provided and, later in the meeting, Unidentified Speaker 1 moved to close the canvass. The motion was seconded and members responded "Aye," formally closing the canvass. Staff said the next procedural step is that the certified results will stand as submitted by the county and that the named top two candidates will proceed to the general election.

The board did not report any other irregularities affecting the outcome of the contested seat.
