Gunnison council accepts 2025 county fire protection agreement; truck purchases to be matched with state funds

The Gunnison City Council voted May 21 to accept the 2025 County Fire Protection Agreement and authorized the mayor to sign the contract.
The council acted after a presentation from Ed Hanson Farchi, who said the county had 21 emergency calls last year compared with 19 inside Gunnison City and urged the council to renegotiate payment levels for county coverage. Hanson Farchi also described a state wildland-protection program that allocates assessed funding by community size and risk, and said matching in‑kind work or equipment purchases can satisfy program requirements.
City staff and council members discussed how the state program can be leveraged. According to the presentation, the state will match certain local contributions: "they'll give $80,000 to the fire district if the fire district will put in $80,000 and then buy a brush truck each year," one presenter said, describing a plan that could free up local budget lines. Council members noted Gunnison is scheduled to receive one brush truck this year and another next year under that approach.
Councilman Mike Warner moved to accept the agreement; Councilman Robert Anderson seconded. The motion carried on roll call.
Council members thanked the fire department and speakers for the presentation and said the additional apparatus and clarified reporting of call volumes will help the community prepare for wildfire and mutual‑aid deployments. The city indicated it will coordinate with county officials and the fire district on next steps and procurement timing.
