The Gunnison City Council spent a substantial portion of its June 18 meeting on public-works reports and event logistics, including trail safety, a hazardous culvert, and park volunteer plans for cleanup and painting.
Speaker 6 flagged a safety issue at a culvert adjacent to Jason Brown’s property near Ross Peterson’s residence, saying vehicles have pulled off and driven into it. Council members discussed installing delineator posts, reflectors or extending the culvert away from the roadway to improve visibility; one member suggested a painted crosswalk or ground markings as an additional visual cue for motorists. "We need a delineator or we need to, like, extend it away from the road," one council member said.
Staff confirmed gateway-side landscaping work had been completed and reported Fourth of July preparations: tent installation planned for Monday at 05:00, vendor layout and volunteer logistics were discussed, and staff said they would provide insurance information to contractors. The city noted it carries a $5,000,000 general-liability policy and will confirm whether event contractors must be added as additional insured.
For park maintenance, Jaylene Dally will bring 36 volunteers for a two-hour session to paint disc-golf markers, pavilion surfaces, and sweep gutters; council discussed appropriate assignments and whether to split the volunteer group across sites. Council also talked about playground-surface repair and seeking quotes for more extensive resurfacing.
No formal decisions were required at this time; staff will follow up on signage options, liability documentation for event contractors, and scheduling volunteer work.
