Mayor Knight outlines plan to repair Daggett County wells after casing damage

"At 239 feet, we have a hole in the casing," Mayor Knight said, identifying the defect in Well No. 1 that she said accounted for sand intrusion. She said the town had engaged an Arizona contractor, Longmire, who specializes in repairing well casings and was expected to mobilize around the "20 seventh or 20 eighth" (as spoken in the meeting) to make repairs and reassemble Well No. 1. Knight said the contractor expects to be able to refurbish Well No. 2 and bring it to roughly 72,000 gallons per day, which would materially improve supply once completed.
Commissioners and town staff discussed logistics and funding. Knight said Tri County would run emergency water-quality tests when samples are provided, and she reported contacting Michael Grange at the Division of Drinking Water for assistance. Cost estimates discussed at the meeting included roughly $180,000 for work on Wells 1 and 2 and an expectation that finishing Well 3 would be less than $100,000; Knight said the town’s prior grant/loan funds for the project were nearly exhausted and that they would pursue supplemental funding at the Community Impact Board (CIB) as an exigent request.
While repairs are scheduled, Knight said intermittent leaks and recent storms have complicated access and temporary measures including conservation notices, shutting water to repeat violators with automatic sprinklers, and coordination with road and public-works crews have been implemented. Commissioners offered to support the town at the CIB meeting and to assist with logistics and sampling where possible.
Next steps: Longmire’s mobilization, emergency water testing, and the town’s planned supplemental funding request to CIB were the immediate follow-ons; commissioners requested regular updates until the system is stabilized.
