Airport board seeks engineer of record; UDOT plans pavement work that would cost Gunnison about $8,500 local match

The airport’s engineer of record retired last year, so the board issued an RFQ to UDOT-preapproved aeronautical engineering firms; the RFQ closes Feb. 28 and the board will review submittals in March.
State DOT staff has included a pavement restoration project in the airport's five-year improvement plan; the state requires a 10 percent local match for that work. "So we would only need to come up with roughly $8,500 from Gunnison's side," Unidentified Speaker 3 said, noting the match would be split 50/50 with Salina. The airport board is also discussing updates to the airport layout plan, adding hangars and a fuel island, and examining options for providing a water source for fire suppression and restroom facilities at the field.
Staff mentioned a longer-term question of whether the airport should pursue federal airport status, which would bring annual entitlement funding but also greater federal oversight. No formal action was taken; staff said they would continue the RFQ process and follow up with the council on funding implications as design and grant opportunities develop.
