At the Oct. 15 meeting, a council member provided an update on ongoing negotiations between the Unified Police Department (UPD) and the county. The council was told UPD will pay the county $1,500,000 to settle separation of financial assets and liabilities dating to July 1 (date range discussed in materials). The transfer covers assets such as vehicles, weapons, computers and other equipment, the report said.
The council member described the process as contentious: Sheriff Rivera disputed some of the data previously presented by UPD leadership and asked to compile alternative data. A follow-up meeting between board members, the sheriff and facilitators was scheduled to try to resolve the differences.
Council members said the settlement vote had passed at the relevant board and described ongoing budget-season discussions. Several members noted facilitator use and meeting scheduling had been slower than hoped.
The council said it would monitor follow-up meetings and receive additional reports.
