Levan — At the Feb. 13 Levan Town Council meeting, regional staff summarized multiple grant opportunities and the near-term timeline applicants should watch.
Shane told the council that UDOT’s Safe Routes to School grant opened Jan. 13 and closes May 23 and that the state's new Community Parks and Recreation (CPR) program is open with an application deadline of March 17. "This 1 does, like, crosswalks and signage and that type of thing within a couple miles of schools," he said of the UDOT grant and described the CPR program as funding traditional park equipment, courts and walking paths with requests up to $200,000 and “probably a 20% match.” He offered to coordinate with town staff on applications.
Shane also said projects submitted for the regional CDBG competition will be rated and ranked by the regional executive board at its March meeting in Richfield (March 5). He said seven applications will be considered and estimated that five to six projects may be funded, while noting final eligibility review by the state could alter outcomes. "So that’s a big milestone to pass," he said of the Feb. 26 eligibility review followed by the March ranking.
Why it matters: These grants can fund sidewalks, crosswalks, park equipment and other community infrastructure. The council needs to decide whether to pursue CPR as a backup for a proposed pickleball facility and whether to finalize any CDBG submittals if county or state reviews raise questions.
What staff will do next: Shane said he will present the CPR application materials to town staff and can reach out to the council to help prepare submissions. The CDBG ranking and notification timeline means applicants can expect a funding decision in early March after regional ranking and eligibility checks.
